FreedHearts are Happy Hearts

I am a LGBTQIA+ ally.
I am also a Christian.

To me, those two things live in perfect harmony.

There are those who believe that they are mutually exclusive. There is a movement to shun and disown and not accept or try to "pray the gay away."

But to me, being a fully supporting LGBTQIA+ ally who leads with love over hate is in perfect harmony with being a Christian. And I'm not talking "love the sinner hate the sin" type support. A beautifully created child of God living their authentic life while causing no harm IS NOT A SIN.

Hate, judgement, misrepresenting God's authority to serve your (not God's) beliefs... those seem, to me, to be more sinful than being authentic to yourself. I've spent a long time looking into the mirror to contemplate this... If you have a heart capable of love and are willing to listen... I recommend doing the same.

If you don't... you probably already stopped reading and moved on... for those who are left... well.. let me tell you about a resource I came across that just re-emerged in my world.

I attended an Austin Independent School District one day seminar/gathering/event a few years ago and one of the break-out session presenters was Susan Cottrell, the founder of FreedHearts

FreedHearts is a non-profit organization formed in 2013. According to their website (and my personal experience with them) this group "reaches into hurting communities with a message of love, inclusion, belonging, and hope — for parents, LGBTQ+, educators, therapists, and the church."

Her story is very interesting... and she even did a Ted Talk - "Why I chose my LGBTQ daughter over the Evangelical Church" telling her story back in 2018. you can watch that here - link.

Well.. it looks like they launched a podcast back in October.. and I just discovered it today. I listened to the Father's Day podcast by Robert Cottrell (Susan and Robert have been married for 30+ years) on Spotify. I highly recommend listening to it... here.

Then it automatically rolled to the next one...which is the one I share below.

I wish that every human being who has a heart capable of love and who is willing to let love move first to guide their lives would give a listen to this podcast...

There is no limit to what we can achieve when Love Moves First.

P-38 Can Opener

This is a P-38 can opener.

Those who are former military may recognize these - they were included in canned field rations from 1942 - 1980s. I was in a church meeting today (1/23/21) for
Kyle United Methodist Church
. The church has had a blessings box food pantry on church property for the last few years (thank you to those who have and continue supported it) and, with the help of individuals and groups in town it has stayed fairly stocked. The need is still there and the canned goods inside tend to get picked up and refilled several times a week.
Anyhow... while talking to someone who was picking up food, Pastor
Stella Burkhalter
learned that, while it's not something most think about as essential because most of us have several of them lying around, there are some who are experiencing a change in housing, homelessness or have left a bad situation and don't have a can opener. It's not something you think about needing until you're looking at a can and don't know how to open it...
While looking for inexpensive items I could find in bulk I came across $50 for a pack of 100. They are also on Amazon for $169.96 for a pack of 500 (photo below).
Why else did these jump out at me?
It says "U.S. Shelby Co." on the piece.... Thats' because P-38s were produced at the Mallin Shelby Hardware Inc in Shelby, Ohio.
Shelby Ohio. That is where my Grandparents are from and where my father grew up. My grandfather is 95 years old and on February 3, 2020 my grandmother passed away in Shelby). It was just 13 days shy of what would have been their 75th Anniversary,
SO...to help me honor them... if anyone would like to pitch in with me to buy 100 or 500 P-38 Can openers with "U.S. Shelby Co" stamped on them that will be used to hand out to folks who are in need... Donate what you like to me at my PayPal.

FYI:
This post was adapted from a post I made on Facebook on January 23, 2021. I'm posting it February 19, 2021... but post-dating it so the story of this Journey is captured from the beginning. When Love Moves First, amazing things can happen.

Encounter on the Road To Emmaus - Luke 24 (13-35)

One of the most difficult things I've done in my spiritual life was also one of my most rewarding. I was the Lay Director of Walk 2201 - Hays Praise Emmaus Community - Hays County, Texas.

It happened to be the last Walk to Emmaus the community had before the pandemic. It was held Jan 30 - Feb 2, 2020 at the Wellspring Retreat Center in Blanco, Texas.

If you are seeking a closer relationship with Jesus Christ and you've never been on a Walk To Emmaus, I highly recommend it. It's a 72 hour retreat where you are removed from the world around you and are able to concentrate on your spirituality. You can find more information and likely find a community in your area from this site: link

Hopefully, when it is safe to gather again, new Walks will take place.

Anyhow... Once church services were relegated to online, I was asked to deliver the bible verse one Sunday and it happened to be the "Encounter on the Road To Emmaus."

I called several folks from Walk 2201 and we recorded ourselves.

I wanted to share this. Love. Moves. First.

The Truth about Memes | Graham's Hierarchy of Disagreement

By Sean Claes

I came across a meme today.

I wanted to share it.

I had it all ready.... loaded up.. all I needed to do was click "send."

Then I thought... although I somewhat agree with this meme... and I find it funny... I am not the originator of this thought, so if anyone sees it they are going to automatically associate those words with me and take them as 100% how I feel...in the way THEY perceive the words. Not in the way I perceive them... so I didn't share it.

I'm going to speak direct and let love move first... and hope that you are reading this with the knowledge that I'm speaking from a place of love. And if you are also coming from a place of love, we can have this conversation. In order to achieve understanding... Love Moves First.

Ok. Here we go.

I truly feel that 75% of the arguing and posturing people do online and learn from memes, opinion pieces and un-legitimate news sources (person/group with a blog or Website that report unverified information that slants to their belief system) is all a big misunderstanding.

What I mean is... we're not defining words the same.

The thing is... in news as well as in life...shock sells. The more outrageous your claim.. the more people flock to you. The louder you spout your soundbite, the more people share it... even if what you're ACTUALLY saying isn't exactly what they believe.

Most people won't disagree with you that black people's lives have worth - black lives matter. Most people won't disagree with you that each and every one of us have worth as well - all lives matter.

But consider thinking about it this way. Your child is killed. At the funeral, you're hurting. It's natural. You're sharing stories and memories about your child. You're wondering why this senseless thing has happened to your precious child. You're in grief and crying out. Then someone from the back of the room yells out at you... "aw... shut up already, idiot. That happened weeks ago. Move on. Besides... All Kids Matter."

As a grieving parent, would that bother you?

AT the funeral... would it bother you?

I mean.. it's a fact... all kids DO matter...

But the timing... I hope you see... the timing is off. Most people arguing the "All Lives Matter" don't understand the timing of their sentiments are like daggers in the hearts of people grieving.

Full stop. Breath.

And the blatant name calling. It's unacceptable.

All Republicans are NOT racist bullies who just want to take money from average Americans. All Democrats are NOT liberal snowflakes who just want a handout.

Name calling is the lowest form of disagreement. It's simply what people who don't actually know what they're talking about resort to in order to not actually think.

That's not just a claim that sounds good... even though it does sound good... right? There's some science behind it... In fact, Paul Graham (who holds a Masters and a Doctorate from Harvard) in 2008 proposed a "disagreement hierarchy" that has become known, fittingly, as Graham's Hierarchy of Disagreement."

I'm a fan of this hierarchy... as it doesn't take sides... it just helps one understand how to best get your point across in the best way possible. Sticking to the subject at hand and refuting the central point of someone else's argument. We would all get along so much better if we stuck to the top 3 points to this pyramid.

When you revert to any of the bottom four, you're only pandering to those who already think like you. Oh, you'll be popular in the "me and all my friends" area... and you'll attract people who are on the other side of the table to respond with similar non-supported arguments. It's totally the way you want to go if you enjoy being a troll and you're not actually looking for a solution. There are plenty of blogs, memes, opinion shows and fringe news sources that will support that lowest common denominator way of thinking.

If you're actually interested in having a conversation where there could be some movement, move higher up the pyramid. Do so by becoming informed. Educate yourself on all sides of the argument, not just yours. Strive to understand where the other person is coming from and how THEY arrived at their thought process. "If moving up the disagreement hierarchy makes people less mean, that will make most of them happier. Most people don't really enjoy being mean; they do it because they can't help it," Graham (in "How to Disagree").

If you don't think this is a strategy that will work, you're arguing with the wrong people. Some are not interested in an actual conversation. They might be perceiving your words as a personal attack or threat, they don't know or care where you're coming from, or they may be trying to posture to people around them.

I know, because I used to think if I just let love move first I could certainly reach folks where they are and they'd respond in kind. I was slapped in the face quite a few times by internet trolls... but it hurt most when they were people whom thought were my "brothers" and "sisters." People who are are members of organizations who's very tenets are to "Do Better" and help others do the same.

I learned that if I'm putting my time and thought and research into a topic and I'm met with name-calling, grammar correction or non-supported contradiction.... those are the folks to avoid engaging with. I've also tried to stop engaging in disagreements or any scale on social media. My life has been so much happier since I learned that lesson.

Now.. if there is a person who is leading with love who has a differing opinion than mine and would like to have a civil discussion, I'll invite them to sit down with me. Heck, I'll buy the coffee/beer... or I'll let you buy the coffee/beer... it's all good... we're adults.

My father and I often differ in political views. One of the most positive things that happened in that arena was when we took a car ride from Texas to Ohio during the summer. We sat in the car and were able to both share our thoughts without being heckled, judged or rejected. I was able to share why I arrived at my political and social beliefs and he listened. He then told me stories I'd never heard that gave me a greater understanding of how he arrived at HIS truth.

I feel now we have a much greater respect of one another.

Now does that mean we changed each other's minds? No. But we both have additional knowledge that helped me arrive at a new conclusion - That most disagreements are based on assumptions and not facts. And unless both sides are willing to let their guard down and try and understand the other... nothing will change that.

Not a well thought out argument.

Not a meme.

In order to progress... Love Moves First.

Do Better.

Do better.
Love more.
Forgive often.
Remember grace.
I’ve been getting caught up in the back and forth again. The angry words. The political “us” vs. “them.” The willfully ignorant. The micro-aggressions. Personal attacks. Speaking before thinking.
I take it in. Respond in love or not at all. Lead with love. Love moves first.
I’m trying. I’m praying. I’m breathing.
So... I say again to myself.
Do better.
Love more.
Forgive often.
Remember grace.

Reflections during a Run

Reflections during a Run

By Sean Claes

Last Saturday (7/25/2020) I woke up with a mission. In order to keep with my weekly goal (25 miles), there were just over 5 miles in my future. So Towdah and I headed out. I put my Contemporary Christian Pandora Station on and ran without a route. I ran down past my friend Gloria’s house and said a prayer for her and her daughter. Ran past the Assisted living and said a prayer for a church member who lives there... then thought about DC who lives in on in San Antonio and he posts about his accomplishments and setbacks with love, humor, rawness and heart... and said a prayer for them. Then I came upon Phillip’s street sign. Memories rushed back about his death in 2013. Of all the running I’ve done over the last 2 years... I’ve not done that 4/28 memorial run. I pray for peace, grace and healing for the family and friends of Phil. I promise to make that run on that day in 2021.

I turned and ran down Kholers Crossing and prayed for the school system and that they make the best decision for our students, teachers and staff. I pray for new beginnings at Hays where healing can begin once selfish pride subsides and love leads.

Then Towdah took over my run... she turned me back down the path near our Mayor’s home... I pray for the city’s continued positive work toward healing and learning surrounding systemic racism. I pray God uses me to assist where He needs me. I then run past my friend Tom’s house where he power washed BLM on the sidewalk and I pray for Ahmaud Arbery who was killed for doing exactly what I was doing in a neighborhood similar to mine.

Then I ran past my friend Anne’s house and I rejoiced in the real conversations we have when we walk each day and I pray for her grace and servant’s heart.

It was a day of reflection. Prayer. Love. Hope. Grace. Joy. Fear. Uneasiness. Sadness. Regret. Forgiveness. Moving. Assurance. Embracing. Acceptance.

I will never forget what caused me to get to the place where I am today. I will thank God for putting the right people in front of me at the moments I needed them the most. I will move forward. I will lead with love.

Love Moves First.

Prayer for Healing from Racism - 7/2020

Candles placed at Kyle United Methodist Church on 7/19/2020 as part of the prayer vigil

Prayer for Healing from Racism

By Tanya Livingston
(As read at the "Prayer Vigil for Healing from Racism and Disease" on Sunday, July 19, 2020 at Kyle United Methodist Church in Kyle, Texas.)

Today we come together to pray for the end of racism and to mourn those who have died unnecessarily at the hands of others.

Past and present we acknowledge these horrific acts of violence and we say their names:
All slavery throughout time.
Emmitt Till.
Addie May Collins.
Cynthia Wesley.
Carole Robertson.
Carol Denise McNair.
Michael Brown.
Freddie Gray.
Eric Garner.
Philando Castile.
Tanisha Anderson.
Tamir Rice.
Breonna Taylor.
Botham Jean.
Ahmad Arbery.
Terrance Crucher.
Oscar Grant.
Atatiana Jefferson.
Trayvon Martin.
Laquan McDonald.
George Floyd.
And so many, many others.

We will not sit around and wallow in our sorrow, though, because we have been called to action by our God and our Savior, Jesus Christ. We are called to acknowledge the truth, educate ourselves, show up and stand up and speak out for those being oppressed.

There are many verses in the Bible that remind us that we are called to love our neighbors as ourselves, to take care of each other.

1 John 4:19-21 (NIV)

This could be standing up to someone’s racist language, calling out misinformation, or changing racist mascots.

We all play a part.

Amen.
